- ➤ Richmond Little League players and their families welcomed 32 youth from Saitama who visited early August for six days, playing games at Byrd Park, touring historic sites and watching a Brewers game in Washington, D.C. The exchange renewed the sister city connection established in 1993 and deepened local ties through shared baseball experiences. Richmond Magazine

- ➤ State lawmakers and experts met on Wednesday to discuss a new funding formula for early childhood education, looking at parental demand, quality cost + economic development. The commission will give formal recommendations by Nov. 1 to help lower long childcare waitlists. VPM
- ➤ VCU and VCU Health have launched a $1.83 billion fundraising campaign called Unlocking Potential to fuel education, discovery and healing. The campaign, which began with a $1.138 billion lead gift, will raise funds through June 2030 — honoring the 1838 founding of the VCU Medical College. 12 On Your Side
- ➤ VCU Libraries will host a virtual panel on October 2 at 12:30 p.m. via Zoom to discuss its new Richmond Police Department Surveillance Collection—featuring 112 restored films and 13 audio reels that capture civil rights era events and protests. Panelists will explain the collection's significance for research and the ongoing efforts to preserve this historic material. Virginia Commonwealth University
- ➤ David and Michelle Baldacci have pledged $13M to launch a Civil Discourse and Collaboration Initiative that will offer experiential learning—curriculum, public forums and programming spaces—for respectful dialogue on complex public issues. - ➤ Richmond voters are now casting ballots early for the 2025 elections, including contests for governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general and the House of Delegates. Early voting will run through Nov. 1 with locations at the Office of Elections, City Hall and Hickory Hill Community Center (hours are Monday–Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. with select Saturdays open until 5 p.m.). - ➤ Legal experts from both sides have raised concerns about changes at the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Virginia after U.S. Attorney Eric Siebert was forced out last week for not prosecuting former FBI Director James Comey. He was replaced by Lindsey Halligan—who has no prosecutorial experience—raising fears that political influence may harm the office. 6 News
- ➤ The City of Richmond will launch red light cameras at 10 high-risk intersections at the end of September if weather permits, using crash data to choose the sites. Chief Rick Edwards said the cameras will operate 24 hours a day and drivers will receive a $50 ticket after a 30-day grace period—signs will be posted at each location. Richmond Free Press
- ➤ The Richmond Office of Elections said that 283 ballots with wrong candidate names were given out on Sept. 19 in areas including Gilpin, Oregon Hill, Downtown and VCU—new ballots will be mailed or voters can cast provisional ballots. Election director David Levine said the office will add extra checks and training to fix the error and prevent future mistakes. Richmond Free Press
- ➤ Governor Glenn Youngkin and State Delegate Carrie Coyner announced they will ask the Commonwealth Transportation Board for $25 million to widen the Meadowville Road Bridge over I-295 in Chesterfield County to ease congestion. The project—supported by local businesses—will change the bridge from two lanes to four lanes and will be reviewed at the CTB meeting in mid-October. 12 On Your Side

- ➤ Henrico is building a new NCAA-regulation baseball complex at Glover Park in Glen Allen—aiming to attract college tournaments and boost sports tourism.
