- ➤ 101-year-old Dan Dorchak from Henrico flew 50 bombing missions as a WWII Flying Tigers bombardier and survived a bullet to his neck—he keeps the removed bullet as a reminder of his service. His diary records the dangers of war and the sacrifices of his crew. 6 News
- ➤ RVA VegFest will be held Sunday, September 28th from 12-6pm at Byrd Park in front of the Carillon and near Dogwood Dell, offering over 100 local vendors, vegan food, and entertainment for families. - ➤ ICA at VCU is launching a series of fall events featuring artist talks, live performances, a chef residency brunch, and Community Podcast Day, with programs set to run from early October into next year—this diverse slate aims to engage the local community in art and creative discussion. - ➤ Richmond celebrates its musical talent at the RVA East End Festival today from noon to 7 p.m. at Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School where Grammy-nominated guitarist Lenny Holmes and jazz saxophonist James (Saxsmo) Gates lead a lineup that also features local school performers, food vendors and exhibit booths to support music programs in East End schools. - ➤ Kathryn Burruss, who began working at the State Fair in 1975, now leads the horticulture department where she prepares the garden and a big tent for agricultural demonstrations—her long service reflects a deep family tradition in the fair. 6 News
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Richmond Public Schools is expanding its dual-language immersion program at Reid Elementary and Broad Rock Elementary on Southside to help students become fluent in both Spanish and English. District leaders said they will hire 55 new multilingual teachers before the 2025–26 school year amid concerns over immigration enforcement and evidence of improved literacy among multilingual learners. - ➤ Henrico County approved a plan to build a 13-mile, $300M water main that will bring water from its West End plant to the East End to back up Richmond if its system fails — the county issued $125M in bonds and design will begin soon with the project expected online by mid-2031. - ➤ City of Richmond will begin its annual leaf collection on Monday, Oct. 6 to protect the city's right of way and stormwater system. Residents may place up to 6 bags on regular trash days, use unlimited bag collection on scheduled days in November and December, drop off leaves at designated locations, or schedule a $30 vacuum pickup on Monday, Nov. 3. - ➤ Virginia will raise the passing bar for state tests—closing the honesty gap—and will phase in the new standard over at least four years. Richmond Times-Dispatch
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ VCU researcher Shunlin Ren discovered a molecule called DUR-928 nearly twenty years ago that was licensed and is now known as Larsucosterol—a drug that could help treat alcohol-associated hepatitis, which kills many people each day. Bausch Health will soon start a Phase 3 trial to test the drug's safety and effectiveness. Virginia Commonwealth University

- ➤ Plans for a new affordable housing complex took shape in Richmond’s North Side after a Sept. 21 groundbreaking where Bishop Barry Knestout blessed the donated land. The project will include 56 rental homes in 14 buildings on a three-acre site for families earning 40% to 60% of the area median income along with a playground, tree-lined driveway, and walking trail to a nearby school — land now managed by the Richmond Catholic Diocese under a 99-year ground lease. - ➤ Marwaha Business Plaza bought Deep Run 3 — a 355,253-square-foot Class A office building at 9954 Mayland Drive in Henrico — with Eric Robison of Thalhimer’s Capital Markets Group handling the sale.
