COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A Henrico volunteer, Maria Budnick, was honored as St. Jude Event Coordinator of the Year for hosting bake sales that raised more than $300,000 for children at St. Jude. She plans to continue her work and hopes to raise $500,000—her next bake sale is set for November 22 and 23 at noon at Glory Days restaurant.  12 On Your Side
  • Francine, the well-known Lowe's cat in Richmond who has been at the West Broad Street store for eight years, was reported missing after she accidentally rode a delivery truck to a distribution center in Garysburg, NC on Friday. Local officials and the Richmond SPCA planned to set traps—pending Lowe's permission—to quickly bring her home.  6 News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Starbucks said it is closing its Richmond stores at 1017 N Arthur Ashe Boulevard and 4320 Commerce Road, with closures beginning immediately. The company said it will give affected baristas severance packages and transfers as part of its global turnaround plan to end the fiscal year with 124 fewer North American stores—a move aimed at strengthening its operations.  6 News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Richmond VegFest celebrated its 22nd year Sunday at Byrd Park with over 50 food vendors and three stages of entertainment—organized by local nonprofits to promote affordable plant-based dishes.  6 News
  • On Saturday, Pridefest 2025 kicked off amid heavy rain in Midtown Green—attendees carried umbrellas and ponchos to reach a muddy field as headlining acts like Saucy Santana performed. Out RVA organized the event with strong support from sponsors such as Dominion Energy even though some companies pulled back.  Richmond Times-Dispatch
  • The 4th annual Run Richmond 16.19 event, founded by actor Djimon Hounsou, was held this past Saturday where participants ran a 16.19-km route tracing historic slave trails in Richmond—highlighting key sites of Black history. Local leaders noted that the event blends fitness with education to reflect on the city’s past as a major slave-trading center while inspiring a better future.  6 News
  • On Saturday, the RVA East End Festival moved indoors to Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School — the event featured performances by Richmond Public Schools students and a closing show by the Richmond Symphony while raising funds for local school arts programs.  6 News
  • Paint On It — a Richmond rock group led by Billy Bacci — released its third album 'Sunshine Trash' on Sept. 12 and now plans to call it quits, with the band not scheduling local shows while members remain open to future projects. The group recorded the album quickly with input from guitarist Matt Moran, bassist Mark Moran, keyboardist Mara Smith, and drummer Drew Barnocky, reflecting a creative burst as they wrap up this chapter.  Richmond Magazine

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Montpelier and Cochrane Rockville Branch Libraries will offer a range of programs in October — including family storytimes, art workshops, science experiments, yoga sessions, and a NASA talk — with some events needing registration.   • A broken water main in Henrico County's West End has forced northbound Lauderdale Drive between John Rolfe Parkway and Cambridge Drive to be closed through at least today — police said crews are repairing the line and urged motorists to use alternate routes.  6 News
  • Former US Ambassador Pamela Bridgewater has written a memoir—Bridging Troubled Waters—that details her journey from growing up in segregated Fredericksburg to serving in Benin, Ghana, and Jamaica while working with Nelson Mandela. The book shows how her early Civil Rights experiences helped shape her diplomatic career.  VPM

  • Central Virginians gathered at Westchester Commons Shopping Center for the 10th annual Conquer Chiari Walk to raise funds for research, education, and awareness of Chiari malformation—an effort to support treatment for a neurological condition affecting about 1 million people.  6 News

  • On Sept. 27, the University of Richmond football team staged a comeback to edge Howard 13-12 in their second home game, with junior defensive back CJ Fraser sparking the fourth-quarter rally with a 55-yard interception run—helping the Spiders secure a narrow win.  The Collegian
