- ➤ Roseshire gaming parlor opened yesterday at Staples Mill Shopping Center in Henrico County with a restaurant, live music and 175 historical horse racing terminals. Churchill Downs built the $35 million facility to create around 100 jobs amid local opposition to a voter referendum—its doors now open daily from 8 a.m. to midnight. 6 News
- ➤ Richmond's new minor league stadium CarMax Park will open in April while construction outside continues for more than 2 years. City leaders said the Diamond District mixed-use buildings will debut in 2028 and later — the plan includes affordable housing, office space, retail, and upgraded infrastructure. - ➤ VCU’s second annual Humanities Week will run from Oct. 20 to Oct. 24 and will feature lectures, workshops, and public tours that show how humanities education builds essential skills—such as critical thinking and communication. The Humanities Research Center in partnership with the College of Humanities and Sciences will host the events to help students and the community explore career opportunities. - ➤ VCU professor Andrew Chesnut — a Catholicism scholar — was chosen as co-editor-in-chief of the second edition of the Encyclopedia of Latin American Religions, which will include over 400 entries and his own section on folk saints. He will work with co-editor Rodrigo Toniol and other colleagues from various countries, and the work will be published fall. Virginia Commonwealth University

- ➤ The Chesapeake Bay Program released a mapping project that showed Virginia lost nearly 50,000 acres of tree canopy to development between 2014 and 2021—data that links rapid forest loss to increased solar installations and expanding development. The new map helps local communities understand land changes over time and plan for conservation and restoration. Virginia Mercury
- ➤ Heavy rain on Saturday flooded Waverly and broke a daily rainfall record at Richmond International Airport—up to 6 inches of water flooded streets and yards with some areas nearly underwater.
