- ➤ 1708 Gallery will host its annual InLight exhibit outdoors at Jackson Ward’s Abner Clay Park from 7 to 11 p.m. on Oct. 17 and 18 — the free event will showcase artist George Ferrandi’s project 'Super!Giant!Jump!Star!' with performances from the Richmond Symphony, singer Mirah and the Ebenezer Baptist Church gospel choir. - ➤ The Richmond Folk Festival marks its 21st year on the riverfront and features a unique tribute—RVA Jams for Justin Golden—honoring the local folk musician diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ A Fordham Institute study showed that most Virginia school board members rated their schools higher than the public, with about 75% giving them A or B grades (from a survey of 5,364 board members in 3,093 districts) while only about half of public respondents offered similar marks. - ➤ Amid a government shutdown, the Department of Education announced it would send home 87% of its employees, including 85% of Federal Student Aid staff, while federal student loans continue to be disbursed and borrowers must still make payments. - ➤ A George Mason University report released Friday shows that Virginia faces an 8% energy demand increase by 2030 and a 20% rise by 2035—data centers and manufacturing are major factors in this growth while nuclear and natural gas power remain key despite supply chain issues. - ➤ Public safety officials in Chesterfield and Henrico counties are offering safety tips during Fire Prevention Week, which runs from October 5 through today, to help residents prevent fires from lithium–ion batteries used in cell phones, e-bikes and trash trucks.
