CRIME NEWS

  • CBS 6 investigated how Richmond prosecutors secure convictions in homicides following the February 2024 killing of Pete Banks at his Jackson Ward home—data shows about 70% of homicide case defendants are convicted while family members and critics say evidence gaps and uncooperative witnesses may leave dangerous people on the street.  6 News

CULTURE NEWS

  • RVA Fashion Week will return to Richmond runways from April 21–27 and showcase bold fashion and streetwear by local and East Coast designers. The new management team will host four shows — one highlighting urban styles, with tickets starting at $15 for general admission and $150 for VIP.  Richmond Magazine
  • In the 2010s, the Richmond Mural Project began by inviting painters from other countries to create murals that defined the new downtown arts district. The program grew to inspire local artists and now brightens many city walls today.  6 News
  • On a recent Friday night, Nami at 218 E. Main St served a 13-course omakase tasting in its new, intimate sushi lounge where chef-owner Tao Chen and his wife Song Li curated each dish to change Richmond’s sushi scene. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Henrico Schools officials have proposed a new rule+ middle and high school students would keep their cell phones tucked away in backpacks or school storage all day while a change for elementary students would ban their phones after a fifth offense. The proposal follows Governor Youngkin's executive order directing the state education department to draft policies that nearly eliminate cell phone use inside school buildings+ districts must adopt similar rules by January.  6 News
  • Armstrong High School in Richmond inducted 85 students into its first-ever National Honors College on Tuesday morning after they balanced extracurricular activities and community service with high grades — each student received a cord during the ceremony — and a school official said the milestone marks a historic achievement for the school.  6 News

  • Henrico county will add more boardwalks along Tuckahoe Creek after receiving a land donation from a longtime local real estate firm. A ceremony held Monday at the former Tuckahoe Village Recreation Association property marked the start of the next phase—additional trails will complement the boardwalks at Old Coach Lane and Ridgefield Parkway.  6 News
  • Susan Gooden, dean of the Wilder School at VCU, received the American Society for Public Administration’s 2025 Dwight Waldo Award at the ASPA annual conference in Washington for her work on social equity in government.   • During Monday’s 1 p.m. budget session, councilmembers expressed frustration that the mayor’s office had not yet published proposed amendments with only a month left until the budget deadline—Council President Newbille promised to refine the process and officials will post the proposals soon so residents can review them before final submission on April 21.  Richmond Times-Dispatch

  • In late March, Dr. Seung Duk Lee from VCU Health Hume-Lee Transplant Center performed the nation’s first fully robotic living donor liver transplant using a da Vinci 5 surgical system—this eight- to ten-hour procedure offered benefits like smaller incisions and quicker recovery times.
