ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • PlanRVA found that Short Pump Mall and Chesterfield Town Center reached surface temperatures of 120 degrees or more because of few trees—other suburban areas with large parking lots can be 10 to 15 degrees hotter. The study warns that high heat may pose health risks for those without adequate cooling.  Richmond Times-Dispatch

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City officials announced Friday that Tanikia Jackson was named City Hall's next deputy chief administrative officer for finance and administration — her appointment will strengthen the city's fiscal leadership.  Richmond Times-Dispatch
  • Riverside Regional Jail has improved since Colonel Jeffrey N. Dillman became administrator in October and started new addiction recovery programs and a violence prevention initiative, with only one inmate death recorded in 2025. The jail recorded fewer assaults and will begin giving Narcan to high-risk inmates on August 1—actions that aim to cut booking delays and fill vacant beds—while serving seven local counties.  Richmond Times-Dispatch
  • Acquisition Logistics LLC, a company registered in a Henrico home, received a $1.2 billion Army contract to build a 5,000-bed tent camp for ICE near El Paso, Texas + defense officials noted that project plans will be finalized soon.  Richmond Times-Dispatch

HEALTH NEWS

  • VCU Health held its second annual Mental Health and Wellness Community Day on Saturday off Old Brook Road in Richmond—local families received free mental health resources while children enjoyed games. Service providers also offered behavioral health support and 23‑hour youth crisis services to help break down access barriers.  6 News
  • Richmond residents faced a heat wave this weekend with muggy temperatures and the Virginia Department of Health urged everyone to drink plenty of water and stay in the shade to avoid burns.
