  • Northern Neck resident Irma Burke will celebrate her 110th birthday on September 25 and is recognized as the second oldest person in Virginia. She recalls riding steamboats and making homemade ice cream on her family farm — memories that her family credits with her strong spirit and long life.  6 News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Richmond’s only multicultural dance festival returns today at Deep Run Park from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.—Culture Encounters presents its second annual event featuring diverse dance performances and global food vendors that connect local immigrant communities.  RVAHub
  • Echoes of a Dream: MLK’s Legacy in Richmond is a new documentary that follows Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s influence on Richmond’s civil rights movement from his early visit to Virginia Union University to his partnership with Dr. Wyatt Tee Walker—details that highlight key moments in local history. The film, produced by Newviews Agency, will premiere on September 24 at Bowtie Cinemas Movieland.  Richmond Times-Dispatch
  • Local game makers will celebrate video games as art in the 'Inner//Action: Games' exhibit running from Sept 26 to Oct 18 at Art Works. Hosted by RVA Game Jams, the free event challenges designers to build games in a 48-hour period with simple controls—using tools like a webcam or one button.  Richmond Magazine
  • The Virginia War Memorial has opened an exhibit—Virginia's MIA: The Search Continues—that honors more than 1,300 Virginians missing in action from past conflicts. The exhibit will be on display for at least a year and aims to help families learn more about the service members.  6 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • VCU researchers under Project PEACE are using photovoice to help students with intellectual and developmental disabilities share their work experiences and employment goals. The program will soon expand to all Richmond Public Schools high schools—building digital portfolios that work like virtual résumés and creating long-lasting community partnerships.  Virginia Commonwealth University
  • Virginia Commonwealth University and VCU Health launched Unlocking Potential: VCU’s Campaign for the Future on Sept. 18 at the Stuart C. Siegel Center— a project to raise $1.838 billion to help learning, research and care. The campaign builds on $1.138 billion raised since July 1, 2020 and will run through June 30, 2030—aiming for 1.838 million alumni and community engagements.  Virginia Commonwealth University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Virginia voters will cast their ballots on Tuesday, November 4 for governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, and local offices as Election Day approaches. Voters must register or update their information by October 10 and request absentee ballots by October 24 while early voting began on September 19 and runs until November 1—polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.  FOX Richmond
  • A city spokesperson said Richmond will install 10 red light cameras at key intersections to curb rising violations—steps that will begin soon.  Richmond Times-Dispatch

SPORTS NEWS

  • HenBIKEo is hosting a Cyclocross event at Crump Meadow this Saturday September 20 from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.—the event offers races, kids' competitions, live music, food vendors, and bike valet parking. Local businesses and sponsors support a fun day for cyclists of all ages.  RVAHub
  • VCU women's soccer lost 2—0 to Miami at Sports Backers Stadium on Thursday night as goals came in the fourth and 55th minutes, and Ryn Feemster— a VCU lacrosse player— made her soccer debut by playing 34 minutes. The loss brought VCU to a 2—5—2 record and the team will start conference play on September 21 at St. Bonaventure.  RVAHub
